Donations are applied to...

Currently, our community relies on drinking water from springs and hand-dug wells which are contaminated with harmful bacteria that can lead to diseases such as Typhoid Fever and Cholera. These diseases have hindered the ability of the students to engage in academics and pursue careers. Our goal is to construct a well at the academy that will serve the 263 students and surrounding village of 2,000. Funds raised through Notre Dame Day will make this project possible. We will also provide educational materials, including a physical demonstration and written documentation for long term maintenance and operation. The well will be managed by a water committee consisting of village representatives that will collect monthly dues from each household to cover maintenance costs in order to ensure the project's sustainability.

Personal Message

Engineers Without Borders Notre Dame gives engineering students the opportunity to pursue service related to their majors through the development, pursuit, and completion of sustainable engineering projects. EWB-ND is currently working with a community in Sangmelima, Cameroon to break the cycle of poverty and promote the general health of the community by providing the village with a reliable source of clean water. During this exciting time, we have the unique opportunity to earn a portion of a $1 Million! Make a $10 gift on Notre Dame Day (April 24 – 25), and receive 5 votes to cast. The total number of votes we receive decides our percentage of the $1 Million. All of the money fundraised will support our implementation trip this coming December.

Why are donations necessary?

The team has already made two assessment trips to the community in Sangmelima. These trips have allowed the team to ensure local support and ownership, perform biological and chemical tests on the current water sources, and meet with local contractors to establish technical and logistical plans for the well. Our final step is funding. We have estimated that the cost of treatment, and construction of the well will be around $20,000. We are working hard to obtain funding though grants and fundraisers, but we need your help. We hope that you consider supporting us in this important work.
