Description

We are the Notre Dame Student Chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Our chapter works towards increasing the number of underrepresented students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at ND. Our mission is to promote the advancement of underrepresented STEM students in employment and education. It is important to us to provide a forum for the exchange of information pertinent to underrepresented STEM students here at ND. We also work with local schools to encourage younger underrepresented students to enter the STEM fields. Please spread the word and help us earn votes!

Donations are applied to...

Most of the money raised during ND Day will go towards covering registration and travel costs to the National SHPE Conference. This year it will be held in Kansas City. The more money we have, the more people we can take to the conference. This conference is the largest technical and career conference for Hispanics and Latinos in the country. Another part of you donations will go towards the cost of bringing local middle school students to campus for our annual STEM Carnival. This past February we were able to bring 60 students from Navarre Intermediate Center in South Bend and introduce them to science and engineering concepts through presentations from different academic clubs. If we have any money left over from your donations, it will go towards the day-to-day management of the club and, hopefully, we will have some money for apparel. :)

Hispanic Engineers and Scientists

This past year, we were able to take 9 students to the SHPE National Conference in Seattle, WA. These students had the opportunity to interview with companies in the hopes of landing internships and full time positions. Everyone had a great time and they were able to grow as a familia in the four short days we were out there. Although no one landed full time positions, there were a handful of students who ended up receiving internship offers. Although our first priorities are to make sure upperclassmen get internships/full time positions, we want to be able to offer this experience to underclassmen as a practice of what to expect when it is their turn to seek out these positions. Another major club event this past year was our STEM Carnival. We brought 60 students from a local middle school to campus and had demonstrations and experiments for them to do so they could get a sense of what engineering is all about. We were able to make this event possible thanks to the help from NSBE, ASME, CHeME car, Baja SAE and the Environmental Engineering Society. Please enjoy the photos from these events. Thank you in advance for helping us continue helping our fellow classmates and for investing in us!

Why are donations necessary?

The more money we have, the more people we can take to the SHPE National Conference We plan on driving the eight hours to Kansas City to help bring down the costs and to be able to take more club members. We also want to be able to bring as many local students to campus and introduce them to different applications of engineering. We have the chance to make a lasting impact on other students' lives but we need your help to do it. With the appropriate funds we can also be able to showcase the club by hosting more events and increasing our membership. One of our club goals is to be able to provide financial assistance to underrepresented students in STEM here at ND. Help us help them.
