Mariah's Comedy Show

My project is a series of moving pieces and experiences that will culminate in a one-hour sketch comedy and variety show that I will write, produce, direct, and perform in the upcoming Fall Quarter. This summer I will be in Los Angeles interning for the comedy video production company “Funny or Die,” and taking improv and sketch classes offered by the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. I’ll also be working and connecting with a group of recent Stanford alumni and participating in some of their already established comedy writing groups. I’ll spend the summer working on improving my capacity and skill as not only a writer but also a performer, and I hope to use the fall show as a sort of comedy capstone project. I’ll spend the summer writing the show, and Fall Quarter I’ll focus on casting, directing, and the overall production.

Funding is applied to...

The money will go directly towards paying for my summer living expenses, my comedy classes, and the production of the project. . The show I create will be free to Stanford students and in its creation I would hope to drawn on a variety of talented comedic performers and bring together members of various comedy communities on campus that don’t often have opportunities for collaboration. Over the past couple years there has really been a boom in the creation of comedy groups on campus, and there is so much talent to draw from.

Project Goals

My goals for Fall Quarter will be to cast the show, produce it (secure performance and rehearsal space, buy props and costumes, advertise, etc.), direct the show and rehearsals, and of course stage the production. The nice thing about a sketch show is that it is composed of multiple pieces and segments, so I can quite easily have a series of short term goals like writing three or more sketches a week and then workshopping them with other writers. By the end of the summer I’ll have a large composite of sketches and can simply pick and chose my favorites.
