Program of Liberal Studies

Notre Dame's Program of Liberal Studies offers an integrated liberal arts education, with courses in the fine arts, history, literature, philosophy, science, and theology, and is rooted in the Great Books tradition with its seminar method of teaching. At the core of the Program’s undergraduate curriculum, small classes of 12-16 students meet twice weekly to study and discuss major texts from the Western and, to a limited extent, Eastern traditions. Parallel to the seminar, PLS students take a required sequence of tutorials that offer deeper, more focused explorations in literature, philosophy, science, theology, political theory, the fine arts, and intellectual and cultural history. Description

Supporting the Program of Liberal Studies, Notre Dame's "Great Books" undergraduate program since 1950.

Donations are applied to...

All donations received through this campaign will be used first for various operating expenses, including faculty and student events (such as the Opening Charge, All Soul's Mass & dinner, Senior Dinner, luncheons with alumni) and publicity for the Program and its activities. When our annual gifts exceed expenses, part of the money is added to the department’s endowment (to generate future interest) and part is used for scholarships for current students with financial need.

Why are donations necessary?

Our regular university budget primarily covers faculty and staff salaries, as well as basic operating expenses. We rely on donations and endowment funding to support a wide range of our other activities, as well as to provide additional financial assistance to students with demonstrated need (beyond the financial aid package given to them by the university).
