Schmitt Fellows are Ph.D. candidates in the science, technology, engineering, and math fields, who are selected based on academic excellence, leadership potential, and commitment to community service. As a Society, we focus on three main goals—community outreach, organizing events on campus, and encouraging social interaction among Fellows. Through Society meetings, we have planned a leadership conference with Schmitt Fellows from other universities, organized community volunteer opportunities such as judging science fairs and participation in pet adoption drives, and facilitated social events like bowling or trivia nights.
The Society of Schmitt Fellows has established a travel award to financially support Fellows presenting at professional conferences in their field. We also have supported events including a campus-wide graduate student STEM poster session and a pi-day 5K run to benefit a local Boys and Girls club. Money raised through ND day will be directed toward one of these endeavors.
Since our travel fund was initiated, our 1 to 2 awards per semester have been far more competitive than envisioned. The number of applicants is continutally increasing and we would like to continue to increase the number of awards given as well. We are proud of our impact on campus and in the community. Extra funding would also enable us to bring more events regarding science and graduate school to both Notre Dame and the South Bend community.
