Special Friends of Notre Dame
The Special Friends Club of Notre Dame and St. Mary's serves to pair university students with individuals in the greater South Bend community who are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders. Our focus and mission is threefold: 1) to foster unique friendships; 2) to create greater awareness of autism and its impact on the local community and the nation; and 3) to enhance and improve the social interaction and communication skills in the children we serve, two of the defining deficits of autism spectrum disorders.
Why are donations necessary?
Special Friend hosts monthly events for our pairs, at which we provide arts and crafts, games, and food. Each Spring, we have an outing to a Men's Basketball game, using club funds to provide reduced price tickets to our members and their families. Our biggest event is an annual Autism Conference, an opportunity to educate both our members and the general public on topics within the field of autism research. The costs for each of the events add up, and we would not be able to provide these services without the help of generous donors. Thank you so much for helping the Special Friends club continue to fulfill our mission of serving local families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders!
